The first film of the franchise, 1994's The Santa Clause, followed divorced dad Scott Calvin (Allen), who accidentally kills Santa Claus and is transported to the North Pole with his young son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) where he is told he must take Santa's place.

Allen wore a 35-pound fat suit including prosthetics and underwent four hours of makeup application to play Santa Claus.

The Santa Clause was a hit, grossing $189 million at the box office, and spawned two sequel films The Santa Clause 2 (2002) and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006).

In The Santa Clause 2, Calvin has grown to love his role as Santa Claus after six years but learns that he has to find a wife by Christmas Eve or lose his place as Santa.

He returns home where he reunites with Charlie, who landed on the naughty list, and falls in love with Carol Newman (Elizabeth Mitchell).

The Santa Clause 3 saw Calvin face off against Jack Frost (Martin Short) who plots to take over his role as Santa.

An official synopsis for limited series reads: 'In Disney Branded Television’s The Santa Clause series, produced by 20th Television, Scott Calvin (Allen) is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever.

'He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties and, more important, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole.

'With a lot of elves, children and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the Pole.'
